Too Wide? PDF Print E-mail
You know that wide takeaway you’ve been working on because that’s what Tiger does? Well, forget it. To hit your ball longer you have to combine width and a wrist-hinge – that’s the key to more powerful drives...

THE PROBLEM: TOO WIDE Image
If this shot looks familiar, then your takeaway is too wide, and that can lead to all sorts of problems. It’s often said that if you get it wide, the ball goes further. This is true to a degree, but only if it’s not too wide and is combined with a solid hinge in the club.

THE CURE
Try this drill to establish the maximum width to suit you...
  1. First, position the handle of the club against your sternum.
  2. Now move the club halfway through your takeaway, making sure it’s still touching your sternum.  You have now established your perfect radius.
  3. As the grip of the club naturally moves away from your body, the wrists should begin to hinge
The combination of width and set (hinge) is the key to greater distance. Ask Tiger – that’s what he does!
